Environmental & Social Studies

We conduct studies in accordance with the requirements of the Department of Environment (DoE), Bangladesh, and align our methodologies with internationally recognized frameworks such as the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF), IFC Performance Standards, ADB Safeguard Policy Statement, JICA Guidelines, and other donor-specific requirements. Our multidisciplinary team of environmental scientists, social specialists, planners, and engineers ensures that each study is technically sound, context-specific, and decision-oriented.

Environmental Study & Research Division (ESRD) provides comprehensive Environmental and Social Studies services to support sustainable, compliant, and responsible development of public and private sector projects. Our services are designed to identify potential environmental and social risks, evaluate impacts, and develop practical mitigation and management measures throughout the project life cycle—from concept and planning to construction, operation, and decommissioning.

Core Environmental & Social Study Services

Initial Environmental Examination (IEE)

IEE is a preliminary environmental and social assessment conducted to determine the potential impacts of a proposed project and to identify whether a full EIA/ESIA is required. ESRD undertakes IEE studies in accordance with Department of Environment (DoE) guidelines and relevant donor requirements. Our IEE includes project screening and categorization, baseline environmental and social condition assessment, identification of key environmental and social issues, and preparation of initial mitigation measures. We also develop an outline Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and monitoring framework. IEE helps project proponents understand regulatory requirements at an early stage, avoid costly redesign, and ensure timely environmental clearance.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

EIA is a comprehensive assessment of potential environmental impacts associated with project construction, operation, and decommissioning. ESRD conducts EIA studies covering air quality, water resources, soil, noise, ecology, waste generation, and occupational health and safety. We apply internationally accepted methodologies to evaluate impact significance and develop mitigation measures following the mitigation hierarchy. The EIA report includes baseline data, impact prediction, alternatives analysis, public consultation, and a detailed EMP. Our EIA services support regulatory approval and ensure environmentally responsible project development.

Environmental & Social Impact Assessment (ESIA)

ESIA integrates environmental and social considerations into a single comprehensive assessment. In addition to environmental aspects, ESRD evaluates social issues such as land acquisition, livelihoods, community health and safety, gender, vulnerable groups, and cultural heritage. Our ESIA studies comply with national regulations and international standards (World Bank, IFC, ADB). We prepare stakeholder engagement plans, grievance redress mechanisms, and social management plans. ESIA enables clients to manage risks effectively and meet lender and investor requirements.

Environmental Management Plan (EMP)

EMP defines how identified impacts will be managed throughout the project life cycle. ESRD prepares practical and implementable EMPs that include mitigation measures, monitoring parameters, institutional responsibilities, reporting formats, training requirements, and emergency response procedures. Our EMPs are tailored to project-specific conditions and integrated with construction and operational management systems. EMP ensures continuous environmental compliance and performance improvement.

Environmental & Social Due Diligence (ESDD)

ESDD involves systematic review of existing or proposed projects to assess compliance with national laws and international standards. ESRD identifies gaps, risks, and liabilities and recommends corrective actions and action plans. ESDD is commonly required for project financing, mergers, acquisitions, and expansion projects. Our ESDD services support informed investment decisions.

Social Impact Assessment (SIA)

SIA evaluates how projects affect people, communities, and livelihoods. ESRD assesses demographic conditions, income sources, vulnerable groups, gender aspects, and community infrastructure. We propose mitigation and enhancement measures to maximize social benefits and minimize adverse impacts. SIA promotes socially responsible development.

Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) & Land Acquisition Plan (LAP)

For projects involving land acquisition, ESRD prepares RAP and LAP in line with national laws and donor policies. We conduct census surveys, asset inventories, valuation, compensation planning, and livelihood restoration planning. These plans ensure fair compensation and sustainable resettlement.

Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) & Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM)

ESRD designs structured stakeholder engagement programs to ensure transparent communication and meaningful consultation. We establish GRM systems to receive, address, and resolve grievances efficiently. This builds trust and social acceptance.

Environmental & Social Monitoring and Audit

We conduct monitoring during construction and operation phases to verify compliance with EMP and regulatory conditions. Our audits identify non-compliance, recommend corrective actions, and improve environmental and social performance.
